Importance of Deck Refinishing
Refinishing your deck is more than just making it look better. By taking the time to refinish your deck with a paint or stain, you can protect it against weather or water damage and help prevent costly repairs. Before needing to fix a hole in your deck or replace rotting boards you never noticed, call us to come by and get ahead of the problem before it ever exists.
Our Refinishing Process
Teak Master uses a multi-stage approach to refinish your deck thoroughly. Our cleaning process is incredibly detailed to make sure the job is done right the first time.
Washing
We start by thoroughly deep cleaning your deck, removing unnecessary junk like dirt, grime, mold, algae, and mildew. By removing old grime, we begin to battle oxidation. If your deck has an old coating that’s already nearly gone, it may wash away during this step of the cleaning process.
This step also sees us washing, scrubbing, and rinsing the wood. It takes time to dry and the exact timeframe is largely dependent on the weather. Sometimes it can dry quickly, but other times it may take us a few days to wait for your deck to completely dry and be ready for the next step in the refinishing process.
Sanding
We then continue the refinishing process by sanding your deck down. Sanding reveals a fresh, smooth layer of wood that’s hiding right beneath the surface of your deck. This is a crucial moment in the refinishing process, as it’s hugely important to carefully sand away any remaining coat from the previous coating while protecting the underlying wood as much as possible. This is also a good chance to sand away any signs of severe oxidation that weren’t fully removed earlier during the first step.
Our team members use a combination of orbital, belt, and floor sanders to get every nook and cranny sanded down correctly. We also do all of our sanding by hand to ensure you get the perfect result. Nobody wants a bumpy deck after all. Once the sanding has been completed, we’re left with a smooth layer of wood ready for refinishing.
Brightening
After we’ve sanded the deck, it’s time to bring out the wood’s bright, natural color. We use a specially formulated wood brightener to get every glimmer out of your deck while also protecting its rich hues. While we’re applying the brightener, we’re also getting rid of any built-up dust that comes from the sanding process.
While other wood brighteners work to simply brighten your deck, we made sure that ours also eliminates and protects against any potential contaminants like mold, mildew, and algae. In Laguna Beach’s climate, this protection is essential if you don’t want your deck to fall victim to the salt and sand that comes with seaside living.
Sealing
Finally, we wrap up the refinishing process with an oil-based sealer that penetrates deep into the wood, giving your deck that gorgeous natural-looking matte finish you’re going for. With nearly two decades under our belts, we know the complexities of different woods and what they need to be completely refinished.
We know that dense wood decks can be a headache, but we have a solution. No matter if your deck is made from teak, ipe, or cumaru, we can apply a thin sealing product that will penetrate deep into the wood, getting past the fine grain. If you want, we can also use a sealer with a special stain that will give your deck an even color across every board. Like sanding, we apply the sealer by hand, making sure every board looks as good as the last.
Types of Wood We Refinish
At Teak Master, we’re proud to say we’re able to refinish several types of wood decks. Right now, one of the most popular woods to make decks out of is ipe, also known as ironwood. It’s a very dense, sturdy wood, making it a great structural choice for your deck. It’s also an extremely oily wood, making it difficult to refinish without expertise. Luckily, we’ve been refinishing these complex decks for hundreds of clients, giving us the experience needed to get the job done right.
Teak Master isn’t just our name; if your deck is made out of teak, we’d be happy to come refinish it and bring it back to life. Teak is an excellent choice for your deck for two big reasons. First, it’s impervious to rot and wood-boring pests. Second, it’s a top-tier choice for outdoor furniture. As our name says, we’re masters at maintaining and restoring teak’s beautiful honey color, giving you a beautiful deck for years.
Another type of wood we’re happy to refinish is redwood. A beautiful wood native to our state, redwood decks are extremely popular because they’re softer than teak but hard enough to last a long time, even when exposed to the elements. We also refinish mahogany, Mangaris, and cedar decks if you have them.
